Hey there Ive been doing this for a little and I started with Krylon not knowing about the flat line of spray they would produce. A while ago on the general board (i think) Cosmo posted a video of how to make those spray round again. Basically it involves scraping down the little nub of plastic that sticks off the cap so it is flat and the hole is rounded again. It can be found here:

So to answer your question it is definately preferable to spray round instead of flat that is of course unless youre doing something that requires a flat line but those effects are better produced by a straight edge.
As to new tips I know there are a lot out there and you can get some tips that do crazy things but I dont think the new krylon takes well to replacement of the spray cap. If you want to mod out your tips or whatever you would need to go with a brand that does not use the 360 nozzle thing. Personally Ive been using Painter's Touch by Rustoleum. They have a nice variety of colors but I hear they are more expensive than Krylon and others. However where I am is the opposite, Painter's Touch is cheaper.
Hope this helped!

It helps a bit if you spray a bit of paint first, then when you remove the tip a bright white spot shows up in the shape of an eclipse when the whole nub is removed.

I found that when I modified the Krylon tips and scraped off the plastic bump so that they would spray round. . I ended up getting way too much paint spraying out. . and on some of the cans it sprayed in irregular patterns and directions I didn't want it to go. I ended up just switching to Rust-o-leum. It has the round spray caps, and it comes out in a nice, fine, controlled mist that can be applied light or heavy as needed. :)

I have some Krylon flat tips also and I definitly have to replace them. I hate them that badly. Is rust-oleum really expensive because I'm thinking of upgrading to a better brand.

It will increase the cost of your paint, but I believe I'm going to stick with Krylon and order different tips that will fit. I'm seeing several sites that sell can tips and specifically mention that they work on Krylon cans. I noticed that Walmart in my area sells tons of Krylon shades for $3.47 (I started with 30 cans before realizing the tips are horrible). Last week they were 'rolled back' to $2.97. When that happens it's time to grab a cart and clear the shelves. Figure the caps costing about $.25 each. Note: I bought the basic Color Place color cans for $1 each but the paint is terrible due to the amount of solvent to pigment ratio. I bought 1 can of black Rustoleum and am now seeing bubbling when I put Krylon on top of it. So, like I've seen before, it's best to find one brand and roll with that.

My personal opinion is that krylon's flat cap blacks and whites are better than rustoleums round caps, because you can cover an entire page quicker, and the same with misting, as it usually takes only 1 or 2 go overs, with krylon, compared to 5 or 6 with rustoleum. But for any other colors, or really any other uses, your hand has to be very fast, because flat caps apply a thicker amount of paint than a circular cap ----------
