Someone at work suggested doing stencils with stuff related to peoples and things at the time, for e.g, a batman stencil, indiana jones ect. In all honesty, from those of you painters who do this pretty much full time, is this a worthwhile thing to pursue??? I'm guessing yes if you could make them fast, but am I missing some kind of issue that could be a problem??? Alot of you seem to do the same space and nature, or is it that you just don't post many template/stencil stuff???

I think it's worth it. I'm not gonna say it's fast to do them, but I have discovered that you can just paint about anything with spray. A lot of thinking goes into them, and the stencil is very basic especially when you have faces involved, and then you just have to fill in the rest with the tools that suit you best. I think it's good to experiment outside the space and nature stuff, but space and nature is still the best stuff to do at live shows. Simple stencils can also be used for live performances, but in my opinion the more elaborate ones have to de done at home, but you can always take them with you and put on display. You never know, you can still sell them! The below is an example of what you can achieve with spraypaint, and much more!

I dont do many stencil pieces... i do a lot of nature and a little bit of space... and a few that fit both categories. AND the stencils that I've been doing lately have been very basic small 1-color silhouettes with not much into them. I have yet to try a big elaborate multi-layered multi-colored stencil yet... mostly because I hate having to wait for the painting to dry in order to do the stencil and then get going on the painting again. HOWEVER -- i love the multi-layered stencil pieces that I've seen put out by SHAG, Bosler, BryanC... and hopefully one of these days I will take the time to try one out on my own. :) Those pieces, in my opinion, are awesome and worth more money than most of those guys charge because of all the time and effort that goes into them. Here's another point of view about VALUE: If you're all about going to a show and selling a bunch of 11x14's quickly because of their extreme popularity, then I think stenciling could really pay off and then if that's the kind of 'value' that you're seeking then I would say it will be worth it. But it wouldn't be the multi-layered stuff though... just basic silhouettes on a cool background... Do 'trendy' stuff like Marley, MLK, Jesus, the Cross, maryjane leaf, etc... like basic 1-shot deals where you put more effort into the background than you do the actual stencil... In that case it's all about having the right stencils that everyone can relate to. I've seen videos of lots of guys selling very basic silhouette paintings every few minutes because they're broad enough that people can relate to them, and they're cheap enough to get the impulse buy from someone just passing by. But to me it seems like that becomes almost "cookie-cutter"ish... not much thought because you want/need to sell. I saw a video of a guy that offered a HUGE range of quick stencil pieces and as soon as he sold 1 he would pull out the stencil for it, spray down a new one and put it right back out in the same spot. But like I said - that's just another point of view regarding whether or not it would be worth it. VALUE is very subjective. ---------- I still have a lot to learn... but I'm trying.

Thanks for the replys guys, this is what I was afraid of.......I think bigger stenicil pieces as great as they look - Bryan your Joker piece is brill, and I mean that mate! the time is the issue I think. 2 or 3 space or nature done in an hour and sold for £60 is gonna be worth more than a stencil whihc may take alot longer, you still have to ake the time worth to create the stencil too?? Could you not make several stencil peiecs at one time, while the different layers dry?? Maybe thats an idea??? For the time being I think I'm gonna stick with peices I enjoy more which is the space, and when I start to make some money I will invest in a bigger stencil, or pay one of you guys to make one for me lol!

stencils are genrally quicker than other peices unless they are multi layered. you only have to cut each stencil out once and re-use it you don't need to make a new one each time.

Tom's right - as far as the 1-color 1-layer basic silhouette goes: once you cut it out you can re-use it for a while. That's what I've come to realize now that I've started cutting mine out of transparency film. The plastic definitely survives a lot longer than when I was cutting stencils out of posterboard. ---------- I still have a lot to learn... but I'm trying. Click here to see my site! Hi shikey, thanks for the compliments man. What you mentioned is what I usually do. I cut out say 5 or 6 stencils in one day, and when I want to paint I start all 6 paintings together. By the time I finish stenciling the last painting the first one is dry enough for me to continue or finish it up. I find it woks wonders for me! Follow this link to visit my Website

The thing that takes up the time is cutting them out. You have to make very precise cuts. When actually doing them, just have a few already cut out and do one layer on one painting then the others and while youre doing the new ones the first ones will dry. You could get several done within an hour. They do end up looking Awesome! Nice ones of The Joker and Ali!
