Been a long time since I've posted. I space paint once a year with kids so I am not an expert. But I have painted one mural that I am quite proud of. I posted notes years ago under this member name. After practicing on paper I decide to try a mural in fluorescent paint on my son's bedroom (hence the member name... he loves space stuff). Hints: I prepainted the wall in gloss paint. Great idea. I wish I had prepainted the right color for the majority of the finished color. I used dark blue as the base and should have used black. Definitely needed a gloss base coat and latex worked fine. So my base coat was dark instead of white which lent a challenge. In the end I presprayed anywhere I would put a planet with White to give a more pure fluorescent color. The exception was when I decided to have a heavily shadowed planet (sort of like a hidden moon for another planet), I painted it directly on the dark base with the same color of the primary planet. The effect was the moon looked like the same rock but hidden...my favorite piece of the mural. Next hint. What paper to use for pulling out the rock effect without lines?? Glossy xmas wrapping paper (Its long and tall). It took my husband's extra hands to help manage the long lines but I have a cave edge going 8 feet long without a crease. Next Hint... looped masking tape holds up the poster board I used to block out my planets without leaving a hole or tape glue. I did let the planets dry before putting tape on them. Next hint. The room was covered with spray dust even though I ventilated with fans (I actually covered every flat surface with plastic sheeting. I was barefoot and had a very thick pad of black paint stuck to the bottom of my feet. Actually I was covered... thank goodness for canola oil. I didn't have any problems with running paint but I kept it thin. Plastic trash bags helped with tecturing larger planets for a molten effect. Bottom line in one day I had a lot of fun and a lasting masterpiece for my astro-Nut. He sleeps with a black light on which keeps the room dark and the wall just pops. Good luck!
